The 25 Best Burgers in Indy - Page 4

  Petite Chou–Clay Terrace

Petite Chou Burger

We were skeptical. What could Martha Hoover, the doyenne of cinnamon toast, possibly know about burgers? Plenty, apparently. The Petite Chou Burger at Petite Chou–Clay Terrace, boasting Indiana farm-raised beef, is served on a toasted brioche bun with sauteed mushrooms, caramelized leeks, and, wait, is that housemade garlic aioli hiding underneath a thick slab of creamy melted Brie? Indeed it is. We stand corrected. (4390 Clay Terrace Blvd., Carmel, 566-0765)

  Meridian

Smoked onion BBQ cheeseburger

The casual mess that is the smoked onion BBQ cheeseburger is unexpected in the dining room of the refined Meridian, but chef Dan Dunville is not afraid to get his hands dirty—at least not at lunchtime. The black Angus beef patty, made from ground ribeye, gets topped with American cheese and tangy homemade barbecue sauce, then gets a garnish of the standard veggies. Add bacon, mushrooms, and avocado for good measure, and you’ll quickly forget you are in one of the finest restaurants in the city. (5694 N. Meridian St., 466-1111)

  Harry & Izzy’s

Classic Steakburger

The fact that last year’s Indianapolis Monthly People’s Choice contest named the steakburger at Harry & Izzy’s the best burger in 2008 did not earn this patty a bye. Nope, it underwent the same scrutiny as all the others, over and over, and passed with flying colors. The secret is in the soft sesame bun, grilled with H&I’s housemade herb butter. The well-seasoned, thick Angus patty shines, and a dollop of spicy mayo adds some zing to the equation. We wish the cheese went all the way to the edge of the 10-ounce burger, but the well-formed patty earned bonus points for staying together despite copious juice-dribbling and finger-licking. (153 S.   Granite City Food & Brewery

Bleu Peppercorn burger

traders point burgerThe bleu peppercorn burger at Granite City is essentially too large to pick up to eat—a challenge, but not a disqualification. The medium-density patty is served open-face on a thick ciabatta roll, putting all of its decadent toppings on display. There’s smooth, creamy bleu-cheese dressing, black peppercorns, hickory-smoked, thick-sliced bacon, cheddar cheese, and a billowy cloud of crispy onion strings. Your best bet is to leave the top of the bun on the plate, thin out the onion strings, and dive in with a knife and fork. (150 W. 96th St., Carmel, 218-7185)

  Workingman’s Friend

Double Cheeseburger

Though it’s a bit rough around the edges, the Friend holds a place in our arteries and minds as the go-to joint for an authentic local burger. At this great equalizer, construction workers, suited-up businesswomen, and everyone in between order the giant double: two thin patties, well-browned and crisped around the perimeter, doused in American cheese, separated by a middle bun and topped with the basics. We like a side of rings and an iced tea (served in a Ball jar) or, if your afternoon appointments are light, a super-chilled schooner of Bud. (234 Belmont Ave., 636-2067)

Purdue Fan says:
I was dissapointed when I read about the burger at Scotty's Brewhouse. That burger idea was stolen from Triple XXX, a restaurant that sits just off the campus of Purdue University. Triple XXX's "Purvis Burger" was copied by a Scotty's employee from their West Lafayette location for the burger contest the company held last year. The Purvis Burger has been a favorite of Boilermakers for years and its a shame that the real brains behind this special burger isn't receiving the credit.

The Cheesecake factory has a burger that is about a half foot tall, it's a days worth of meals in itself, and boy is it delicious!

Tie Dye Grill has the best burgers in Indianapolis!
