Believe it or not, there’s a group that exists pretty much to stare at smartphones together. Pronounced I-G-ers Indy, this loosely organized crew of Instagrammers boasts 11,000 followers on its collective account (@igersindy) and attracts new members through “Instameets,” monthly IRL walkabouts for the purpose of documenting landmarks, pretty spaces, and, increasingly, spots the public doesn’t get to see much.
Three years and 32 sessions in, the group has upped its profile, scoring its first art exhibit and invitations to restricted spaces, like The Children’s Museum’s archives. They have roamed an empty Union Station and framed artsy shots of barbed wire at Traders Point Creamery, experimenting with various apps (Snapseed for editing, VSCO for filters, TouchRetouch for precision adjustments). Members also convene around IG’s hashtags, like #thatgarageview, which revealed, among other panoramas, a majestic vista from Bankers Life Fieldhouse’s parking facility. #whoknew?
