Each October, we're drawn south to Brown County, lured by roadside stands lined with pumpkins and pots of mums; the high, lonesome sound of fiddles and mandolins; and the baskets heaped with fried biscuits and apple butter. And, of course, to the turning leaves—the maples, hickories, and oaks that set the hills ablaze in red, yellow, and bronze. But, just between us, if you only take a spin through the state park or stroll down Nashville’s sidewalks, you’ll miss the true charm of Indiana’s autumn retreat. To discover the county’s hidden gems, you have to turn off of the highway and lose yourself on back roads that might not show up on your GPS.
Over the past decade, we have asked longtime locals to tell us their favorite places to eat, shop, and disappear into the woods. We’ve done quite a bit of exploring on our own, too, most recently in the October 2011 cover story, "Hidden Brown County." And here’s the result: All of IM’s very best Brown County coverage, compiled online for the first time.
