Editor's Note: Leng and LeDuc fell from third place in the standings to a spot outside the top four today. Leading after Friday's short program, Castelli and Shnapir clinched the title. U.S. figure skating's governing body will ultimately decide what two pairs move on to compete in the Sochi Olympics next month.
DeeDee Leng and Timothy LeDuc have been training at the Carmel Ice Skadium with a gleam in their eyes and a glance toward February's Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. After receiving their short-program results at Friday's U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Boston, LeDuc added a new expression to his repertoire: Jim Carrey Face.
The figure-skating pair is one-tenth of a point out of second place at the weekend competition. Two tandems will move on after Saturday's free-skate program, though not necessarily the top two finishers. Ultimately, a U.S. Figure Skating committee will tap who represents the United States in Sochi. The free-skate portion of the event will be televised on NBC today at 3:30 p.m. and replayed at 8 p.m.
Leng, who turns 20 next week, and LeDuc, 23, teamed up in June 2012. They have worked together for a far shorter period of time than the two pairs ahead of them in the current standings, including the leaders, Boston natives Marissa Castelli and Simon Shnapir. DeLuc formerly competed with Greenfield's Cassie Andrews, with whom he won a U.S. junior bronze medal in 2011. The 6-foot-1 LeDuc hails from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Leng, who didn't skate competitively for three years before pairing with him, comes from Naperville, Ill.
Below is footage of the two competing at the U.S. Nationals in January 2013. They placed ninth at the time.
