An opening reception for Julianne Swartz’s new exhibit How Deep Is Your was held March 13 at the Indianapolis Museum of Art in the McCormack Forefront Gallery. Gallery curator Rachael Arauz gave guests a guided tour of the space. Swartz uses photography, plus magnets and other everyday items in her installations. The lenses in different pieces of work help transfer these mundane objects into “magical moving pictures.”
Swartz’s piece for which the exhibition is named, How Deep is Your, is a site-specific installation reinvented specifically for the IMA. A blue tube winds its way through different parts of the museum, transporting snippets of two popular songs, John Lennon’s “Love” and the Bee Gees’ “How Deep is Your Love.”
As to the source of her artistic inspiration, Swartz says this: “Just living.” It comes from different moments she has experienced in life: the way the sunlight falls on water, as well as interactions with nature and with her family. Swartz, on the scene at this opening reception, lived in New York City for 15 years before relocating to a house in New York State with her husband and daughter.
