The Feed: Morels, Mom, And More

This week’s trends in Indy dining.
» Blink and you’ll miss morel season, that magical time in spring when foragers and chefs work together to make the most of this rare, tasty mushroom. The season only lasts a few weeks, so keep your eye on local restaurant menus to see how your favorite spots use them. We’re smitten with the picnic platter at Bluebeard (653 Virginia Ave., 317-686-1580), where fried morels are served alongside fellow spring superstars asparagus and ramps.

» If you’re lucky, you might still find morels early in the farmers market season, officially in swing next week. The Original Farmers Market at Indianapolis City Market (222 E. Market St.) jump-starts everything on May 3, followed on May 6 with Broad Ripple, Garfield Park, Carmel, and the Market at Hague (7800 N. Hague Rd.). Greenwood Farmers Market (525 N. Madison Ave.) is back on May 13, and Avon (8244 E. U.S. Highway 36) follows on June 6.
» Yolk (220 E. South St., 317-632-9655; 2727 E. 86th St., 317-451-9655) launched a Pancake of the Month program in April, kicking things off with choco-berry cakes. You’ve got a few more days to get your hands on the dark chocolate-infused pancakes, stuffed with chocolate chips and topped with raspberry purée, strawberries, and blackberries.

» Here’s a surefire way to get on Mom’s good side: plan a delicious Mother’s Day outing. Some local favorites that are usually closed on Sundays have special Mother’s Day brunches on the calendar, including Stella (608 Massachusetts Ave., 317-685-2550), Meridian (5694 N. Meridian St., 317-466-1111), Rail Epicurean (211 Park St., Westfield, 317-804-8555), Cerulean (339 S. Delaware St., 317-870-1320), and Rook (501 Virginia Ave., 317-737-2293). Table by Market District (11505 N. Illinois St., 317-689-6330) is having a brunch buffet, with six food stations and a spread just for the kids.  Don’t dillydally on the planning. Many spots are reservation-only, and will fill up fast.

» Sullivan’s Steakhouse (3316 E. 86th St., 317-580-1280) is wrapping up a major renovation. The restaurant is open for business with a spiffy new interior, while work finishes this month on the exterior.
» If you want to learn more about gardening and home food preservation, the Indianapolis Historical Society is offering a free Planning to Canning program on Saturday, April 29 at the Felege Hiywot Center (1648 Sheldon St., 317-545-2245). Spend the afternoon at this urban farm and get tips for planning your own backyard garden, followed by a class on canning your produce at home. The event is free, but advance registration is requested.
