It was half-price wine bottle night, so we chose to cut the heat with a bottle of 2008 Gilt Pinot Gris from Oregon, a soft, sweet accompaniment to the complimentary pretzel bread, served with a trio of spreads, and an appetizer of a (rather bland) white polenta cake, topped with crispy leeks, shrimp, tasso ham, and a (redemptive) spicy cream sauce.

Last Night We Ate At Napolese  (114 E. 49th St., 925-0765), Martha Hoover’s artisanal pizzeria that opened on Monday, and by the looks of things, most of the Meridian-Kessler neighborhood decided to eat there as well. We tried to have lunch at Donique African Restaurant (4150 Lafayette Road, 280-8009) at the old Tadkaa spot, where a new sign indicated that it is now serving Liberian food—but no one was even stirring inside, well after their posted lunch hours.

Make no mistake, there is only one Maria’s Pizza, and right now you will find her at her new Fountain Square digs (1106 Prospect St., 786-9283). We (and, apparently, many other pizza diehards) assumed that the 50-year-old southside landmark’s former Shelby Street location still had the original goods.
