Iozzo’s Garden of Italy

Hearty family recipes fill the menu at Iozzo’s Garden of Italy, a storied spot south of downtown, but those wishing to avoid the plentiful red sauce can opt for the fresh daily fish, excellent scallops, and generous lobster ravioli paired with rock shrimp and a tomato-cream sauce—a holdover hit from former chef Kathy Jones. Standards such as chicken marsala and veal piccata can be a bit inconsistent, but appetizers, including a playful meatball martini and crunchy calamari with two sauces (pesto tarter and sweet chili), are always good bets, as are flutes of tiramisu and a fudgy sea-salt brownie with caramel sauce. A surprisingly good Manhattan (an homage to the family matron) with optional smoked ice and cherries tops the cocktail list, but a carafe of Chianti is a delight on the adorable patio behind this historic, brick-walled storefront.
