With its chummy staff and brief menu of homestyle food—like lemon-pepper chicken and baked salmon—this Irvington favorite feels like a comfortable old haunt, even on a first visit. Two dark-wood dining rooms have rich Craftsman details and motifs, and the bar seats fill up in the evening with regulars (take that, community tables). A bargain at just $8, the popular Dad’s Crunchy Chicken—a breast dredged in seasoned breadcrumbs, sauteed, and then baked—arrives on a plate heaped with garlic mashed potatoes and actual vegetables, as if somebody in the kitchen wants to make sure you eat well, bless their hearts. Start with a cup of whatever cream-based soup they’re serving that night, and finish with a warm brownie a la mode. Beer and wine only.
