Decorator Matt Heincker’s design blog (heinckerdesign.wordpress.com) has a big British following, so there must be a lot of flats that look like his masterfully mixed home-based workspace in Carmel. But anyone who heeds his advice (espoused every month in The Indianapolis Star) throws in at least one shocking color, too—so what gives with this monochromatic scheme? “It allows my mind to visualize different color combinations for my work,” he says. “That said, it generally feels like an itch that needs to be scratched. I’m considering an electric-blue office chair."
CROWN MOLDING“It’s essential in a room to make the old feel new. I painted [the molding] charcoal, which gave my mother a heart attack.”
SHELTER MAGSHeincker loves the bold combinations in Living Etc. After the British publication followed him on Twitter, his blog began receiving traffic from overseas.
RAM'S HEADHeincker likes “something crazy in all the pretty”—like this Z Gallerie objet above his desk.
CURTAINSThese sheers cost $25 at Bed Bath & Beyond.
DESKSPairing a 1960s desk with a French Provencal dining table reflects the designer’s taste for contrast and expands his workspace.
WHITE CERAMICSJonathan Adler pieces anchor a collection supplemented with knockoffs from stores such as T.J. Maxx.
FABRICThe retro flame-stitch pattern—modernized in gray shades—of Heincker's perch set the color palette for the room.
CHAIRHeincker recovered this piece of furniture, his desk chair, himself in a class at the J. Everett Light Career Center.
