Indiana Fever Team Joins Obama at White House

The president feted the 2012 WNBA champions in Washington.

Indiana Fever players got face time with the hoops-centric president of the United States this past Friday. President Barack Obama congratulated the 2012 WNBA champions on their thrilling victory at the White House.

As he often does during times of non-crisis, President Obama cracked some jokes while honoring the Hoosier favorites. After introducing coach Lin Dunn, he mentioned her former trip to the White House as a Girl Scout, quipping, “I won’t say which administration that was.” She politely thanked him.

The president’s wit came to an end when commending the Fever for their off-court achievements. They frequent local schools as volunteers for the Read to Achieve program, and have helped build homes in Indianapolis through Habitat for Humanity, among other initiatives. Fever forward and team MVP Tamika Catchings is not only a three-time Olympic gold medalist, but according to the league, she’s one of its players most devoted to her community. “Players on the Fever have received a combined 13 WNBA Community Assist Awards for countless hours they spend volunteering,” President Obama said. Both Catchings and Fever guard Katie Douglas have received the award.

At the end of his address, the president picked up right where he had left off as jokes went: “I just want to say that I might try to recruit Coach Dunn to run for something.”
