This seasonal contest was a grade-A success.
UPDATE: Our-back-to-school contest brought in—and elicited—many smiles. The winner: 6-year-old Cooper Casavan, who warmed our hearts as technology allowed him to "enter" his first-grade classroom from Riley Hospital for Children. Cooper had mitochondrial disease, and, sadly, he passed away on October 12, 2013. We're remembering and honoring him here.
At left is the winning photo in our contest, submitted by Cooper's mom. She wrote, "Due to [his disease], Cooper spent a lot of time in the hospital and missed the majority of school. His school set up Skype sessions so he could still be part of his class and learn right along with them."
She continued, "It was sad for us to not get the typical first-day-of-first-grade experience like we had imagined, but thanks to his amazing school and his amazing team at Riley he still was able to have a first day of first grade and how cool to get to go to first grade in Batman PJs?"
The family won a brand-new iPad Mini, as pictured at right. Cooper got the news on September 18 during another hospital stay, and Kara said he was elated. With her blessing, we salute Cooper here for his courage at such a young age.
