Commercially Speaking [video]

You can’t deny that commercials have their own special place in the hearts of football game watchers everywhere. While a few might fall flat, most are pretty funny/silly/crazy/amazing in their creativity and longevity. There’s even a website dedicated to these short films, and every year media experts give their two cents about the individual commercials and what they think of that year’s crop of commercials as a whole.

While most of these are made by big budget advertising agencies, and involve months of research to determine what will work on big screen TVs in living rooms and sports bars across America, a select few have started with the dream of just one or two regular guys or gals.

In 2009, Joe and Dave Herbert from Batesville won the Doritos “Crash the Super Bowl” contest with their commercial featuring a vending machine and a snow globe. [VIDEO]

This year, Doritos is once again offering its contest–with a top prize of a cool $1 million and a spot during the big game alongside an appearance spot by The Lonely Island: Saturday Night Live‘s Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone, and Akiva Schaffer. The deadline for contest entries was midnight on Monday, but don’t worry–even if you didn’t enter anything, you can still check out the contenders. Five finalists will be posted for final voting on January 4.

Here are a couple submissions from a local film production company, Stick Figure Pictures, that we enjoyed:

“Gnome More For You”–in which Doritos mysteriously go missing

“Hidden Addiction”–in which a coworker is caught indulging in cheesy goodness in an unlikely place

Check them out, and let us know your favorite entries for this contest and other game day commercials in the comments.
