ShopTalk: James Dant in Irvington

A new boutique outfits natty gents.

Fashion entrepreneur Tommy Dant’s groomed lumberjack beard may look familiar: The 23-year-old is a fixture at hip events like Tanjerine, where he hawks his custom splatter-painted tees and Vans sneakers. These days, you’ll likely find him behind the brick counter at his bespoke Irvington shop, James Dant. At the gorgeously outfitted haven for men, rugged elements—pallet-wood accent walls, old pipes turned into racks—suggest dudes should enjoy shopping here. For the threads, Dant prides himself on products that seem straight out of Brooklyn. (The sturdy selvedge denims, made using old-fashioned methods, actually are; they start at $147.) Who else stocks American-made perforated shoes (under $200), Zanerobe button-downs with a seafaring motif, and flat wooden bow ties? Lifestyle needs can be met in-store, too, with Proof wooden sunglasses, Dant’s own line of beard oils, a fixed-gear bike from State Bicycle Company—and advice from the owner to resist ditching facial hair this summer.
