The Vote Is In: Perea, Jurkin Must Sit 9 Games

The NCAA suspends two of IU’s freshmen until December.

In case you missed it amid all the election noise, the NCAA suspended freshmen Hanner Mosquera-Perea and Peter Jurkin for 9 games as punishment for their involvement last year in a program, run by a minor IU donor, that provided them with international trips home and cell phones. The allegations originated with an ESPN investigation. For their part, coach Tom Crean and the local blogs seem flummoxed. The Star also questions the ruling. Dick Vitale tweeted on the subject, calling the penalty “absurd.” IU is appealing, but there is a good chance that neither player will be available until the game against Butler on Dec. 15. If you’ve been following the team this preseason, you know that Perea is the bigger loss. At 7 feet tall, Jurkin certainly has presence. But Perea, who can jump out of the gym, was the Hoosiers’ second most promising recuit. Stay tuned to The Tipoff to see how this all plays out.
