Dining Discovery: Porter Books and Bread

Porter Books & Bread isn’t a place you stumble upon accidentally. You have to look for it, tucked in among the winding roads and renovated historic barracks of Fort Benjamin Harrison. But your efforts will be rewarded with locally roasted nitro coffee on tap and freshly baked focaccia at this two-story, book-lined alcove reminiscent of a college student union. The decor makes sense when you consider that co-owner Will Worley thinks of himself as a “perpetual student,” and that he opened the cafe with his wife, Marcy, because they longed for a space that married their love of both bread and literature. The sandwiches, which take their names from celebrated authors like Austen and Twain, are served on housemade breads (whole loaves and trays of focaccia are available by order) and lean heavily on regional ingredients. If you find yourself in the throes of a carb coma, perk up with coffees from Mile Square and Brickhouse, served hot, iced, or silky smooth from the nitro tap.
