Referee's "Buttocks" Call for Colts Is Just His Latest Quip

NFL referee Ed Hochuli harbors both prestige and popularity in his biceps that are the talk of the sport. But when he opens his mouth, sometimes a special line comes out. That was the case again on Sunday, when the lawyer-by-day ruled that the Indianapolis Colts wide receiver T.Y. Hilton’s “buttocks was down” before he appeared to fumble the football. As a refresher, that clip here:

We’ll spare any easy jokes here at the expense of TV commentator Marv Albert, he of an allegedly tawdry history. Instead, let’s focus on another of the greatest hits in Hochuli’s officiating career, which is 22 years young. The ref, branded “Hochules” by many admirers for the impressively fit arms he brandishes with each first-down gesture, once also deadpanned these words in an NFL game: “There was no foul on the play. It was not a hold. The defender was just overpowered.” That subtly hilarious clip here:

Of course, here in Indy, we readily appreciate any call that causes nemesis New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick’s face to twist up into a scowl. Game on, Ed Hochuli. Hero.
