Tonic Ball Rocks Fountain Square

The Kinks, Stevie Wonder, and U2 may seem like unlikely concert mates. But pair that trio of acts with three Fountain Square venues, 47 local bands, and one great cause, and the 11th annual Tonic Ball event turned out to be one great party. Tonic Ball, which benefits Second Helpings, a local food rescue and distribution organization, rocked Fountain Square this past Friday, Nov. 16.

NEW IN TOWN: The Tap Beer Bar

Bloomington is making room for its newest beer spot, The Tap (101 N. College Ave., Bloomington). The craft beer bar recently opened on the college town’s downtown square, offering 50 daily rotating taps and around 500 bottled beers. That’s a lot of options, but owner Nathan Finney hopes the concept will appeal to craft beer connoisseurs as well as novice sippers (a demo he believes has been underserved). New to beer or just overwhelmed by the whopping menu that ranges from cream ale to quadrupel? The servers are loaded with beer knowledge and willing to help you choose something.

Winnie Ballard, Colts Fans & More Turn Canal Pink

Rain did not dilute the hue nor the attitude of today’s Pinking of the Canal put on by the Indianapolis Colts and Hard Rock Cafe. For the third year, Colts organization staffers, volunteers, breast-cancer survivors and cure seekers, and friends turned the canal pink to recognize National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Colts cheerleaders, along with the team’s mascot, Blue, and Super Fan Michael Hopson all donned their best pink in support of the event.

Mitchell Indiana Persimmon Festival

Leaves are not the only things beginning to fall from the trees of Indiana. In Mitchell, the community’s beloved persimmons have begun their annual drop. This Saturday, the town celebrates persimmon season with the 66th Mitchell Indiana Persimmon Festival. As any veteran persimmon baker will tell you, the local fruit is best harvested once it falls naturally from the tree. Alverta Hart, persimmon and novelty dessert coordinator for the Persimmon Festival says the fruit has a “puckery” and unpleasant taste if harvested directly from the branch. And since the majority of the 130 to 230 contestants who flock to the festival each year reference a similar, if not almost identical, pudding recipe, it is important to pick persimmons at the peak of maturity.
