Lily & Madeleine: Everything You've Missed

The soulful, sisterly duo earned major international cred this fall after releasing a debut album. Here, we recap their crowning moments.

Since the October release of Lily & Madeleine’s first full-length album, it’s been hard to keep up with the sisters’ media blitz and performance schedule—one that has earned them nearly universal love on two continents. Here’s all the articles, tweets, reviews, quotes, and online videos you might have missed:

October 5
The sisters appear on CBS’ “This Morning” for their first (but not last!) interview and performance on national TV. (Watch it here.) They also meet up with fellow indie musician Sufjan Stevens, cofounder of their Indy-based record label, Asthmatic Kitty, and pose for a photo by the Brooklyn Bridge.

October 8–11
L&M take a short Eurotrip to play shows in London, Berlin, and Paris, while still taking time to see the sights in cities like Brussels. They recently announced they’ll return to the UK for another tour in 2014.

October 14
In New York for sold-out performances, L&M stop by Paper Magazine’s office to play a few tunes off of their new album.

October 24
The Indianapolis Star
premieres their music video “Come to Me.”

October 25
Their “Spirited Away” music video premiers, and USA Today sings the duo’s praises.

October 27
Just two days before their album drops, L&M perform at Luna Music in SoBro, one of their hometown hangouts.

October 28
The New York Times
reviews the album, describing the sisters’ songs as full of “romantic yearning, adolescent languor, eager trepidation at what lies ahead.” The CEO of the Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce shares the link on Twitter.

October 29
“Lily & Madeleine” drops on iTunes, and the artists post a video thanking fans for their support. The Chicago Tribune publishes an exclusive interview with the sisters, showing off their down-to-earth nature amid a “sudden rise to fame.” Says Lily, “We’re just normal teenage girls. Instead of being like …” “Kardashian types,” Madeleine says, finishing her older sister’s thought. 

November 1
Indianapolis Monthly
got in on the action and took a tour of Madeleine’s freshman dorm room at IU.

November 14
Paste Magazine
names the teen duo the “Best of What’s Next.”

November 15
Tiny Mix Tapes calls for a listen to L&M’s “Paradise.”

November 18
The Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra announces that L&M will perform at the January 23 Happy Hour concert.

November 24
Much to the sisters’ delight, Rookie magazine, basically a teenage girl’s online bible for trends and advice, picks L&M for their “Sunday Video” special, highlighting their “nearly identical angel voices.”

November 25
L&M earn the “Single of the Week” title with “Come to Me” from British music site “The Digital Fix.” British-based Absolute Radio also calls it a “Record of the Week.”

November 26
Stereo Subversion talks with L&M about getting signed and writing their owns songs.

December 2
The sisters film a video with City Sessions, a UK showcase of fresh musical talent from around the world.

December 5
When “best of 2013” lists begin to roll out from the media:

  • L.A.–based music site Restless Cities picks L&M’s debut album as a best release of 2013, naming “Back to the River” their favorite track.
  • The sisters are up for Best Album of the Year on NPR Music. (Click here to vote.)
  • And they make IM‘s very own Best of Indy list, of course! Lily and Madeleine take the stage at the Best of Indy party for a live performance of “Paradise.” (Click here to watch it.)

December 6
Lily and Madeleine spread some Christmas cheer with their Elle magazine-exclusive carol.
