General American Donut Company
» We worried about the uber trendiness of this Fletcher Place doughnut shop that plays cartoons on the wall and serves Portland’s Stumptown Coffee. But even if doughnuts are the new cupcake, GADCO is no gimmick. Each variety, from the gooey Black Raspberry Key Lime to the rolled oats–topped Hippie Cake, is made from scratch—fresh, sweet, and totally habit-forming. 827 S. East St., 317-964-0744, generalamericandonutco.com

The Cake Bake Shop
» Looking like something out of a storybook, this Broad Ripple patisserie peddles lavish, bodice-ripping treats like the five-layer Marie Antoinette Caramel Cake, featuring tiers soaked with bourbon-vanilla syrup, and an Inside Out German Chocolate Cake filled with toasted nuts and coconut and iced in Belgian chocolate ganache. 6515 Carrollton Ave., 317-257-2253, thecakebakeshop.com

» This Zionsville bakeshop specializes in addictive miniature desserts like two-bite sugar-cookie cream sandwiches; macarons in flavors like salted chocolate caramel, honey lavender, and even the occasional PB&J; panna cotta shots; and cake pops galore. 640 S. Main St., 317-873-1001, bitesdessertbar.com
