The Feed: Cake Bake Shop, Essential Midwest Restaurants, and More
This week’s trends in Indy dining.
» Cake Bake Shop owner Gwendolyn Rogers announced on social media last week she’s opening a second location at the Carmel City Center in the fall of 2018. Rogers told the Carmel Current the new shop will be nearly double the size of her original Broad Ripple restaurant and bakery (6515 Carrollton Ave., 317-257-2253), and will offer expanded lunch, dinner, and brunch menus.
» The Cooking Channel announced an air date for the Indianapolis episode of Big Bad BBQ Brawl, taped earlier this summer at His Place Eatery (6916 E. 30th St., 317-545-4890). The episode, featuring a Smoked BBQ meatloaf contest between host Shannon Ambrosio and His Place chef and owner James “Mackie” Jones, will premiere on October 24th. Local judges include Milktooth chef Jonathan Brooks, radio host Dan Dakich, and FoodLoveTog blogger and culinary instructor Candace Boyd Wylie.
» Breakfast and lunch spot Rad’s (4733 E. 126th St., 317-740-0129) is now open in the former home of Cafe Patachou on the east side of Carmel. Owner Josh Hall is in the kitchen of the breakfast and lunch spot, named after Rad Bailey, a World War II vet and grandfather of Hall’s wife.
» One month after opening Provision on the second floor of the Ironworks Hotel (2721 E. 86th St.), Cunningham Restaurant Group launched breakfast and lunch boutique Rize in the same building. Chef Natalie Wall oversees a menu of salads, breakfast bowls, and trendy toast options including avocado with fennel and radish slaw, or fig mostarda with Canadian bacon and triple cream cheese.
» Eater released a list of The Midwest’s 38 Essential Restaurants, and only two Indiana eateries made the cut— Fletcher Place neighbors Rook and Milktooth. The editors swooned over Jonathan Brooks’s greatest hits at Milktooth, including the dutch baby pancakes and lamb burger, and Carlos Salazar’s creative takes on the Filipino flavors he grew up with, like Rook’s crunchy crab lumpiang in purple yam crepes.
And if ya don't know, now ya know . . #Repost @sousmanchu ・・・ It's always an honor to be included on lists like these @milktoothindy with so many chefs I've looked up to for years.
