The Feed: Alan Sternberg’s Field Brewing Connection, And A Pop-Up Sausage Fest

» Something interesting is brewing in Westfield. Field Brewing (303 E. Main St.) is under construction on the main drag through town, and owners Greg and Jacki Dikos have made some low-key announcements on social media lately about an impressive lineup in food and service staffing. Alan Sternberg, multiple James Beard Award nominee and former executive chef at Downtown’s shuttered Cerulean, will be the opening chef for the new venture. Caleb France, owner of the still-open Cerulean in Winona Lake, will lead the service team. France has been working with the brewery owners for more than a year to get the operation up and running, and recently brought on Sternberg to oversee the kitchen launch. Sternberg has been the executive chef at Cerulean Winona Lake since January and expects to split his time between both places once the brewery opens this summer. (The team is hoping for a July debut.) Sternberg says he and his wife, Audra, still have plans to open a brick-and-mortar location of their pop-up dinner series, Common House, but is unsure if it can come together before the end of 2018.

» On Thursday, Sahm’s Place (2411 E. 65th St., 317-202-1577) hosts a pop-up beer-paired Sausage Fest featuring a links-heavy menu and Bier Brewery quaffs.

» Sun King announced the food vendors for its upcoming distillery and taproom, scheduled to open on July 2 in Carmel. Customers at the family-friendly venue will dine food hall–style on a variety of local options. According to The Indianapolis Star, Fountain Square’s La Margarita Mexican restaurant, Goose the Market’s Oca, and food trucks Pi Indy and Beast will operate food stalls inside the 15,000-square-foot facility, with guests eating in common-area dining rooms or on the expansive rooftop deck. The distillery will be located along the Monon trail in midtown Carmel, just south of Main Street.

» Books & Brews keeps growing and growing. The latest franchise for the Indiana-based company opened in Speedway (5836 Crawfordsville Rd., 317-288-5135) last weekend, with future locations expected in the Mass Ave neighborhood (643 Massachusetts Ave.) and on the south side (3808 Shelby St.).

» Donut Refinery (12525 Old Meridian St., Carmel) is now open. The pick-your-toppings shop offers a vanilla cake doughnut as the starting point, with customers taking it from there on the topping selections. We have our eyes on the strawberry glaze with fruit loops.

» May 18 is karaoke night at Indianapolis City Market (222 E. Market St., 317-634-9266). For $5, you can sing your heart out under the twinkling lights of Wabash Way, the alley behind the market. The first 50 people through the door get a free can of Sun King beer. Attendees must be 21 and over.

» If you’ve been patiently waiting for Ed Rudisell to open The Inferno Room tiki bar in Fountain Square but really need a paper-umbrella fix, you might consider a short drive to Kokomo. Craft-cocktail-and-beer lounge The Coterie (107 W. Sycamore St., 765-450-5002) transforms into The Sunken Cob every Saturday night, with a tropical vibe and tiki cocktails.

» Fresh strawberries and rhubarb are the surest signs of late spring and early summer for Indiana produce, and Traders Point Creamery is celebrating with a strawberry-rhubarb ice cream. It’s a limited-edition flavor and available only onsite at the creamery, so plan accordingly.

» The Indiana Grown Wine Trail is here, just in time for warm-weather adventures. Download the map of wines produced in the state of Indiana, get a stamp on your visit to each local producer, and collect your free custom wooden wine stopper when you’ve completed the trail. There are currently 31 winemakers on the state map.
