» Eddie Sahm is opening Big Lug Liter House (5301 Winthrop Ave.) in the former home of Bent Rail Brewery, and he’s gathering a team of Indy’s favorite chefs to bring his “Bavariana” concept to life. IM‘s Terry Kirts has the inside scoop on the unexpected and exciting team that includes Eli Anderson (H2O Sushi), John Adams (Salt on Mass, Marrow, Plow & Anchor, Bluebeard), and Blake Ellis (Repeal).

» Broad Ripple stalwarts Corner Wine Bar and The Wellington are closed. Owners Elizabeth Bruner Morse and Liza Zappata sold the restaurants after nearly 17 years of partnership. According to The Indianapolis Star, buyer Chris Kirksey plans to merge the spaces, remodel the interior, and open again in a few weeks as The Corner. Kirksey, the former bar manager at downtown’s Mo’s, A Place for Steaks and Prime 47, says the Wellington basement will remain a bustling live-music venue, but all other signs of “The Welly” will be gone.

 

» Both local locations of RAM Restaurant & Brewery (12750 Parkside Dr., Fishers, 317-596-0085; 140 S. Illinois St., 317-955-9900) are offering a sandwich they’re calling The Impossible Burger. It has the look, taste, and texture of beef, but is 100-percent plant-based. Can a burger made with wheat and potato proteins, coconut oil, and heme, an iron-containing compound that gives meat its color, actually taste good? We haven’t tried it yet, but consider us intrigued.


» Petite Chou Bistro (823 Westfield Blvd., 317-259-0765) is participating in the worldwide Good France event on March 21, when more than 3,000 restaurants in 150 countries will celebrate French gastronomy with special menus. At Petite Chou, the four-course meal is $45 per person (plus $25 for wine pairings), with 5 percent of the proceeds benefiting the Patachou Foundation.

» It may be cold outside, but the official start of spring next week and visions of sunshine has us googly-eyed over cider from Irvington’s Ash & Elm Cider Co. (2104 E. Washington St., 317-600-3164), available for the first time in cans.

 

» Oprah has spoken, and she wants the world to know about the mint chocolate chip cake at Gwendolyn Rogers’s sparkling Cake Bake Shop (6515 Carrollton Ave., 317-257-2253) in Broad Ripple. The three-layer Valrhona chocolate cake with mint Swiss meringue buttercream is on the “O” list in the April issue of O, The Oprah Magazine.

» Learn to make your own sushi at home at the “Sushi, Sake, and Soba” class on March 16 at A Cut Above Catering (12955 Old Meridian St., Carmel, 317-575-9514). Tickets are $75 (buy one and get a second ticket for half price). Attendees will receive instruction from an expert sushi chef, taste a variety of sakes, and eat the sushi rolls made during class.
