Chicken-sit
Professional pet-sitters are packing local chicken-care classes to expand the services they offer to clients. Steal the idea and offer to chicken-sit for your nearest backyard farmer—for free, but with the caveat that the eggs you gather are yours to keep.
Volunteer
When Fall Creek Gardens sets up its coop this summer, the group will need volunteers to care for the growing birds. Offer to help, and you’re likely to earn an egg-cellent reward.
Rent to (Maybe) Own
Agrarian (317-493-1166) rents out fully equipped coops, complete with chickens. Try tending a flock for a month for $400. If you don’t like it, send it back. But if those feathered friends flap their way into your heart, the boutique will credit the rental fee to your coop purchase (generally $1,200 to $1,400).
