Something about adulthood convinced us that cake is for special occasions only. Good news! Every Friday is a special occasion at 10 Johnson Avenue, where owner Greg Wolfe launched Cake Night as soon as he opened his cafe in Irvington last fall. With sweets on the counter, dimmed lights overhead, and live music on the stage, Wolfe aimed to create what he thought was missing in the neighborhood: a dessert stop for grown-ups. “There are places that are well-lit, cheery, and great for families, but not ideal for adults who are on a date,” he says.
To the delight of diet-restricted patrons used to watching Indy’s cake scene from the sidelines, every dessert on the counter is also gluten-free. “My mom has been gluten-free for 20 years, before it was trendy,” Wolfe says. “If you didn’t know our baked goods were gluten-free, you wouldn’t even notice.” What’s more, the former Lazy Daze Coffee House has been completely made over with a large kitchen that allows Wolfe to serve sandwiches and soups as well. 10 Johnson Ave., 929-1019
