Photos: Summer Solstice Yoga on Monument Circle

The celebration included a mass yoga exercise involving hundreds of heat-braving participants.

Local yogis unrolled their mats onto Monument Circle’s bricks and concrete steps on June 21 and performed sun salutations en masse. At noon, this epicenter of downtown Indianapolis turned into a sweaty assembly of flexible participants and dutiful instructors from Monumental Yoga. The free 90-minute workout not only made for donations to Growing Places Indy and Y12SR but also allowed each attendee to find that sometimes-elusive yet harmonious center. Although some participants were more experienced than others, the purpose of the gathering was agreed upon by most all on hand (and leg, and back): to enjoy yoga—if in sweltering, 90-degree heat—and to join in the worldwide Summer Solstice celebration.

Mission accomplished.
