Indianapolis has been hounded by spats of rain recently, but Monday saw perfect weather for Indy Pride’s fourth-annual Pet Pride event. Hundreds of humans and pets—mostly dogs but also a few cats and lizards—descended on Garfield Park for a record-breaking romp that included pet pools, food trucks, and a canine-couture show.
All in all, the attendee tally went like this: 1,200 people, 650 dogs, four cats, and two lizards (one decked out in a hat). That record-setting participation came on the heels of 450 runners and 100 walkers having a go at the third-annual Rainbow Run & Walk on Saturday and more than 1,200 being served lunch at the Indy Pride community picnic on Sunday, which led into the longstanding Bat ‘n’ Rouge drag queens–meet–softball event.
The event is part of Indy Pride’s weeklong festival that culminates with a main-day downtown bonanza with dozens of food vendors, sports groups, and performing-arts acts, including some internationally lauded talent such as DJ Dave Aude and barrier-breaking singer Steve Grand. That daylong event sees tens of thousands pass through the gates each year.
