It’s been exactly 20 years since he won the the Indy 500. Now, at 48, he returns as the oldest driver in the field.
“If starting up front in the biggest race in history is your thing, I guess it’s pretty cool.”
In May 1996, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway saw speeds never reached before or since, with Luyendyk setting the pace. But there is one milestone the two-time Indy 500 champ still wishes he’d reached.
“People ask me, ‘Why don’t women race full-time?’” says the British driver, set for a fifth start in the 500. “It seems to be incredibly difficult—still—for female drivers to make that transition and find that level of sponsorship.”
The four-time champ recalls how close he came to first place in 1982—one of the greatest finishes in the history of the race.
