September 28–30: Open House on Monument Circle, 10 a.m.–8 p.m. Thursday and 11 a.m.–9 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Merchandise will be on display but not for sale, and there will be prize giveaways. Representatives will sign people up for the free Ikea Family program, which is a must for sizable discounts. If you’re already a a member, change your home store to the new Fishers location (11400 Ikea Way, Fishers, 317-813-7801).

October 4: Media preview. While it’s not open to the public, expect lots of photos of Ikea in your social media feeds.

October 7: Ikea Family preview. Select locals who are Ikea Family members were invited to a sneak peek at the store (see, the benefits are terrific). If you’re a member and didn’t get invited, don’t bombard the store with a request. There will be plenty of bookcases left when Ikea opens.

October 9: The camp-out begins. Those who want to wait at Ikea’s front door for two days may start lining up at 9 a.m. The most hard-core campers will probably queue across the street even earlier so they can drive in first. The camp-out line is extremely organized. Ikea provides security, numbered wristbands, portable toilets, snacks, and staff-led games, and it has rules, such as limiting out-of-line breaks to 10 minutes. Bring a tent, chair, blankets, extra cell-phone battery, and food and drinks. You can order food to be delivered. Ikea will give away merchandise to a number of campers yet to be announced. It’s a good bet that the big giveaway, like a piece of furniture, will go to the first 45 people in line (an educated guess following Ikea’s grand-opening pattern), as this is Ikea’s 45th store in the United States. Smaller items will be given away to those beyond spot 45.

October 11: Grand opening. The store opens with a log-cutting ceremony at 9 a.m. and closes at 9 p.m. The restaurant, which has a separate entrance and is also accessible through the store, opens at 9 a.m. It serves a $2 breakfast, among other items.

October 12–15: Giveaways continue. The first shoppers (number not yet announced) through the door at 10 a.m. on these days receive a freebie, too. Regular daily hours begin: 9:30 a.m.–8:30 p.m. for the restaurant, 10 a.m.–9 p.m. for the store; on Sundays, the restaurant closes at 7:30 p.m. and the store closes at 8:30 p.m.
