What $600K Gets You in Herron-Morton Place
A historic home, modern finishes, and skyline views.
Hopeless, beyond repair, not worth saving—that’s what people told Gilia Chazan four years ago when she eyed a dilapidated Herron-Morton Place Victorian that had been turned into an apartment building. But the flourishing near-northside neighborhood charmed her, as did the home’s storied past: It was built in 1872 by carpenter Wisley Adams, who platted Lockerbie Square and constructed many of the area’s original cottages. Chazan purchased the fixer-upper in 2011 and didn’t waste any time getting to work.
Over the next two years, the 3,919-square-foot house was completely gutted and rebuilt. Chazan had to adhere to strict historic-preservation guidelines, requiring her to replace the rotted siding with cedar wood and use poplar for the window trim and balcony, which she painted stark white, along with the front porch, to pop against the cherry-red exterior.
A clean, modern style reigns inside with hand-scraped birchwood floors, chandeliers, and exposed-brick fireplaces. Chazan dreamed up a lavish second-floor master suite with a spa-style bathroom starring a two-person soaking tub and an open standing shower with LED raindrop heads that change color with the water temperature. The master’s most alluring feature? An attached deck that provides sweeping views of the city’s skyline.
