Photos Galore: Midwest Fashion Week 2014 Recap

Looking back at the weekend’s shows

Midwest Fashion Week came back with a bang October 20–26, bringing some of this season’s new trends along with it. This year, the designers met for a week of energized evenings in the Indianapolis Artsgarden. Check out some of the dos and don’ts from the Thursday- and Friday-night shows below, or click through the full gallery above.
Do experiment with a new color palette. The hottest styles this year are taking a cooler approach in muted blues, purples, and slate grays. These conservative color schemes are juxtaposed with extra-structured, form-fitting silhouettes.

Don’t shy away from tougher details like leather accents or visible zippers. Designer Kahindo Mateene from Project Runway incorporates these more-rugged elements through a leather collar or an asymmetrical zipper on a basic blazer.

Do try mixing patterns—and guys, this trend is for you! Whether it’s pinstripes, floral, or plaid, it’s all fair game this season. Berny Martin of Catou combines deep hunter greens and navy blues with rich textures for a look that says trendy sophistication. Another takeaway from Thursday evening? It’s time to ditch the classic tie. Nearly all of the Catou models sported a patterned bow tie to complete their look.

Don’t think it’s too early to start shopping for your next swimsuit. Designer Altrichia “A.Lekay” Cook of Allusions by A.Lekay Swimwear designs some of the trendiest poolside apparel for the hotter months of the year. A.Lekay Swimwear includes high-waisted designs, along with a mixture of neon ensembles and black-and-white color schemes. Sheer panels along the hips were another trend spotted Thursday evening, showcasing a tasteful and unexpected way to show some skin.

Do sport this season’s hottest hairstyle: the topknot! Always chic and oh-so-easy, you’re bound to impress in the office and over the weekend. Designer Maryam Garba combines the updo with a bold statement necklace or a chunky bracelet to give the look an elegant touch.

Don’t be afraid to stick with what you know. Trends come and go as seasons change, but designers Bahar & Reza prove that you can always count on the classics. Pencil skirts paired with structured jackets dominated the runway Friday evening, proving that fit is what makes or breaks an outfit. The married couple adds an interesting flair to these familiar silhouettes, however, by incorporating their appreciation for Persian art into the design and colors of the pieces.

Bottom line? Do as the pros do, and have fun with your wardrobe.
