SCREAM QUEEN, A “boutique and social club with a bestie vibe,” as bubbly owner Michelle Spalding puts it, sells all things pink or sparkly, alongside eclectic vintage wares, local art, craft supplies, and a garland bar. In the back of the shop named for Spalding’s love of horror films is a community space for maker classes and fright-flick movie nights. “The goal is a place where girls feel encouraged to be bold, creative, and connected,” says Spalding, who sells handmade enamel mushroom earrings on behalf of a local ninth grader. Turning neighbors into friends is a priority that was on full display one Friday. Spalding told kindergartner Theo to pick as many prizes as he liked off her Trinket Trade Table. (He took three, promising to return with replacements.) When found-object artist Dan wandered in, she encouraged him to send photos of his work. Dogs are her neighbors, too. Bernedoodle Flossy got a cheesy treat from the jar that Spalding keeps close at hand, then locked eyes with her. “Okaaaay. One more, just this time.”
