Best Bars for Cubs Fans in Indianapolis

We found the best bars for all the Cubs fans coming out of the woodwork during the playoffs.

Fat Dan’s

(5410 N. College Ave., 317-600-3333)

To quote Fat Dan’s Twitter account during Wednesday’s Wild Card play-in game, “If ur not here right now…u messed up.

The SoBro spot is a popular haven for Chicago transplants looking for their hometown deli favorites and a place to support the Cubbies loud and proud. With a pre-game band scheduled for Friday at 3 p.m., the pub recommends showing up a bit early. Hey boss, what do you say?

Elbow Room

(605 N. Pennsylvania St., 317-635-3354)

The downtown pub has something for everyone. You can hide in a far corner with your beer and curse the Cardinals or head up to the more boisterous remodeled upstairs bar for a livelier experience.

Side note: For what it’s worth, Andrew Luck has been known to dabble in a bit of trivia at the Elbow Room, according to Twitter sightings.

South of Chicago

(619 Virginia Ave., 203-7110; 13578 E. 131st St., Fishers, 219-6039)

Indianapolis has finally found a serious appetite for Chicago-style deep-dish pizza with Giordano’s coming to town, but it’s South of Chicago that brings the authentic Chicago feel. Founder Bob Jaeger, a Chicago native, has outfitted his Fletcher Place and Fishers spots with signs and flags bearing team logos, leaving no question as to his sports loyalties.

For those typical in-game lulls, you can argue whether Chicago-style can even be called pizza at all. Here, Justice Scalia famously weighed in on the deep-dish debate.

Coaches Tavern

(28 S Pennsylvania St., 317-917-1191)

Well, if you (like Andrew Luck) are searching for trivia night, pass on by. This downtown pub canceled its trivia to support their Cubbies on Wednesday night. With first pitch looming right after work, the central location sets Coaches apart from these other bars.  A $2 Old Style is just a short walk from everything downtown.

Trivia night has been canceled so we can focus on our Cubbies tonight! $2 Old Style Cans!

(49 W. Maryland St., 317-951-0033)

Back in 2012, we listed Champps as a Top 20 sports bar, saying, “A scan of this wide-open space reveals the bar’s egalitarian approach to courting Indy’s sports fans: Banners trumpet the Colts, the Cubs, Notre Dame, the Reds, and the Boilermakers.” While a rousing edition of Go Cubs Go! probably won’t break out at this Circle Center spot, there’s always the diversion of the mall shops if the bats aren’t heating up.
